ELECTRODISINTEGRATION OF Ta AND Au NUCLEI
Yield curves were measured for the production of 5.6day Au/sup 196/ and 30-see Au/sup 195/ from Au/sup 197/, and of 8.1-hr Ta/sup 180/, 2.1-hr Ta/sup 178/ , and 9.3-min Ta/sup 178/ from Ta/sup 181/, in foil stacks that were bombarded by electrons. The results were analyzed to compare the yields resulting from the direct effect of the electrons with those resulting from bremsstrahlung from the electrons. The comparison shows that the direct effect is relatively larger than is predicted by existing theories of electrodisintegration if the transitions being excited are entirely electric dipole. Agreement with the theory ran be obtained if eleciric monopole and quadrupole transitions are assumed present. The theory makes use of approximations which are probably not valid for nuclei with high Z. If there is a monopole resonance in the region of 25 to 40 Mev excitation, its contribution to the 2n and 3n reactions is less than 30% of the contributions of higher multipoles to these reactions.
