An enhanced, pyrotechnically operated current limiter system (Current Limiting Protector--Type CLP) and an associated high speed sensing and triggering system (Fast Fault Anticipator--Type FFA) were developed and tested. The ratings for this new system are 38 kV, 1,200 Ampere, 20 kilo Ampere peak let-through current on a 40 kilo Ampere (RMS sym) prospective fault current. The basic principles involved in the current limiter system of the Current Limiting Protector were developed during the previous EPRI development projects RP1142-01 and RP1142-02. The development effort in this project was directed toward the extension to higher voltages of the technology demonstrated in the prior projects and as a secondary objective to explore the possible design of a sensing and control system which would offer greater flexibility in the application of the CLP system. Several mechanical, dielectric, and short circuit tests were conducted on the interrupter assembly and the control circuit components in order to simulate possible application conditions and to verify their ability to meet the performance characteristics specified for the design. An outdoor station type 38 kV CLP system was designed and built for field trial installation at Rochester Gas and Electric Corp. Due to scheduling problems and problems encountered with some of the specialized portions of the control system, the field trials and staged short circuit tests were not completed. In addition, a complete FFA control system was designed and built for field trials in an existing 23 kV, three phase, outdoor CLP installation at Consolidated Edison Company of New York. At the same time, two additional commercial FFA systems were sold to Consolidated Edison Company of New York for similar CLP applications. As of the date of this report, all of these FFA control systems have performed properly without incident and are still operating satisfactorily.
