DRAGON: GRAPHITE

Journal Article · · Nuclear Eng.

Nearly the entire core and reflectors of the Dragon 20-Mwh helium-cooled reactor are to be constructed from graphite, which means that several different types of new graphites are needed. The requirements for these graphites are given: (1) high densities on the onder of 2.0 g/cm/sup 3/, (2) low permeabilities on the onder of 10/sup -6/ cm/sup 2//sec, and (3) satisfactory performance at high temperatures up to 1700 tained C. (1) is necessary for reactor economy, and the reason for (2) is the need to delay fission prcduct diffusion thrcugh the fuel box for at least 1 hour. Graphite, a notorious absorber of water vaper, must be completely degassed. The graphite requirements are also discussed on the basis of three separate groups, the outer reflector, the inner removable reflector, and the fuel elements. A graphite has been manufactured for fuel rnd cans, based on Morgaa Crucible' s EY9 and impregnated with furfuryl alcohol; its designation is CYll9. (D.L.C.)
