A calutron ion source was designed which offered shieldin g of the filamentary cathode by a plate-shaped arc cathode which can better withstand positive ion bombardment. Besides the two cathcdes, which are separated by a control collimating electrcde, there is a plate-shaped arc anode separated from the arc cathcde by a collimating electrode and a hollow arc block.
