The influence of nickel and chromium content on stainless steel corrosion by nitric acid is analyzed. A decreasing iron--chromium diffusion rate due to increased chromium content results from a simultaneous action of chromium in slowing active state diffusion while speeding up the passivation process and increasing the cathode overpotential in nitric acid reduction. An increase of nickel content produces an opposite effect on corrosion and electrochemical behavior. (R.V.J.)
