An x-ray diffraction investigation of Nb oxidation at elevated temperatures showed that oxygen forms solid solutions with Nb and that oxidation at the lower temperatures studied produces alpha phase Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/ and at higher temperatures produces alpha and beta or beta phases of Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/.
