MEASUREMENT OF SMALL CONCENTRATIONS OF ARGON-41 IN AIR

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4141850
Knowledge of the dispersal of radioactive aerosols from a reactor stack is necessary in order to assess the hazard to those in the environment following a reactor accident. The measurement of argon-41 in air, which is produced by neutron activation of atmospheric argon in reactor coolant channels, is a convenient means of determining dilution factors. The apparatus described used a detector consisting of thin plastic scintillators and is capable of detecting argon concentrations as small as 0.02 x 10/sup -12/ C/ml in the presence of background gamma radiation of up to 0.15 mr/ hr.
