Processes for producing fine-grained wrought Mg- Zr alloys with excellent creep ductility and good grain growth resistance at high temperature are described. Zirconium in alloy billets is precipitated as hydride by heat treatment in a hydrogenous atmosphere before extrusion. Homogenization heat treatments in a nonhydrogenous atmosphere before extrusion give stiffer alloys. Be, Mn, and rare earths can be incorporated in the alloys; specific compositions, processes, and properties are discussed. (D.C.W.)
