The angular distributions of protons elastically scattered Ni/sup 58/, Ni/sup 62/, Cu/sup 63/, and Cu/sup 65/ were measured for proton energies of 5.45 and 6.8 Mev and by Li/sup 6/, Li/sup 7/, CO/sup 59/, Cu/sup 63/, Cu/sup 65/, Ge/ sup 73/ Ge/sup 74/ Cd/sup 111/, Cd/sup 113/, Cd/sup 116/, Sn/sup 116/, Sn/sup 117/ , Sn/sup 118/ Sn/sup 120/, Sn/sup 122/, Sn/sup 124/, Pb/ sup 207/, Pb/sup 208/, Bi/sup 209/, and U/sup 238/ for 19.6-Mev protons. Linear accelerators of 5.5 and 19.6 Mev and a 6.8 Mev cyclotron were used as fast proton sources. Proton scatterings were recorded at various angles by a scintillation spectrometer and nuclear emulsions. The recording methods and the target thicknesses produced accurate recordings of elastically scattered protons, discriminating the inelastic. It was observed that at 19.6 Mev, Cd/sup 111,113,116/ defraction scattering is identical except for slight shifts at the extremes (depending on mass number). However, Cd/sup 111/ has five energy levels up to 600 kev, Cd/sup 113/ has four, and Cd/sup 116/ has only one. The curves of angular dependence for Cd/sup 116/ and Sn/sup 116/ are identical but the absolute value sigma ( THETA ) sigma /sub RH/ ( THETA ) for one nucleus is about twice as large as for the other. Quantitative and qualitative differences in the angular dependence sigma ( THETA ) sigma /sub RH/( THETA ) at large angles for even-even nuclei (Cr/ sup 52/, Ni/sup 58/, Ni/sup 60/, and Ni/sup 62/) and odd-odd (Co/sup 59/ and Cu/ sup 65/) were observed at energies of 5.45 Mev. Consequently, even one unit change in neucleon number alters the angular distribution in proton scattering at energies lower than the potential barrier. (R.V.J.)
