The reduction of uranium (IV) compounds dissolved in molten salts, using excess liquid aluminum and resulting in aluminum-uranium alloys, was investigated. It was found that the reduction process in salt baths containing chlorides proceeds easily but is slow in fluoride salt baths. The chemical reactions for these salt mixtures are discussed and a reaction scheme to obtain liquid aluminum- uranium alloys containing 20 to 30 aid more wt.% uranium is given. (auth)
