SOME LAVES PHASES OF YTTRIUM WITH TRANSITION ELEMENTS

Journal Article · · Acta Cryst.
The cubic laves phase (C15 type) was found in the phase systems of Y with Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni. Alloys containing pared by co-melting with yttrium in an arc furnace. The alloys were homogenized by annealing in vacuo in silica capsules at 870 deg C for 125 hr, with the exception of Y- Ni alloys which were annealed at 950 deg C for 100 hr. The samples were quenched rapidly in water, pulverized, and annealed at 400 deg C in evacuated Pyrex capsules. X-ray diffraction studies were made on the specimens, and because of the reflection intensities, the relative intensities were calculated for YNi/sub 2/. The agreement between observed and calculated intensities for YNi/sub 2/ confirms the proposed structure for the compound. Some variation in the observed intensities due to the different dispersion of the CuK alpha radiation by Ni, Co, Fe, and Mn was noted, but the agreement of the calculated intensities for YNi/sub 2/ and observed intensities of YCo/sub 2/, YFe/sub 2/, and YMn/sub 2/ leave little doubt that these compounds are all isostructural. The lattice constants and interatomic distances for the compounds are tabulated. (B.O.G.)
