LITHIUM IN ALUMINUM-X2020

Journal Article · · Metal Progr.
OSTI ID:4138235
An Al--Cu--Li alloy (4.5% Cu, 1.1% Li, 0.5% Mn, 0.2% Cd) having high strength over the temperature range 200 to 400 deg F was developed and has the designation number X 2020-T 6. lt has low density and high modulus of elasticity, which makes it attractive for applications involving buckling, and about 10% is saved in weight over other high-strength Al alloys. Fatigue tests revealed that X 2020 is notch-sensitive, but this sensitivity can be avoided in aircraft by appropriate design. Aging bebavior of X 2020 is also discussed. (D.L.C.)
