ELECTROLYSIS OF TITANIUM DIOXIDE IN MOLTEN SALTS (in Russian)

Various titanium oxides, especially TiO/sub 2/, were electrolyzed in molten cryolite at 950 deg C at current densities from 0.5 to 3.0 amp/cm/sup 2/, resulting in the deposition of an alloy containing usually 7 to 12% -and occasionnlly up to 30% titanium on the molten aluminum electrode. Metallographic tests revealed the presence of the TiAl/sub 3/ phase in the melt. If the titanium content is higher than 10%, the precipitated alloy is usually solid. Tests were also made with chloride melts, such as KCl-NaCl and CaCl/sub 2/BaCl/ sub 2/-NaCl. It was demonstrated that it is feasible to prepare metallic titanium under the experimental corditions. The reaction mechanism involves the discharge of the Ca/sup 2+/ ions at the cathode, followed by a partial redissolution of the element in its molten chloride, then reducing the suspended oxide to elementary titanium.
