S>Kinetics of polyvinyl chloride formation were studied in the irradiation (4 x 10/sup 3/ to 8.2 x 10/sup 4/ r/hr) at25 deg C of the monomer in cyclohexanone with lauryl sulfate as emulsifier. The reaction proceeds in two stages, initiation and growth. In the first stage, polymerization of the monomer is initiated by free radicals and proceeds in emulsifier micelles, resulting in the formation of latex-like particles. No more particles are formed in the growth stage, but particles already formed continue to grow until the supply of monomer or free radical is exhausted. The effects of irradiation time and dose rate, emulsifier concentration, and vinyl chloride concentration were investigated. (BBB)
