FT VALUE OF O$sup 14$ AND THE UNIVERSAL FERMI INTERACTION

The experimentally observed near equality of the coupling constants in beta and muon decays has suggested that all the "weak interactions" proceed by a universal Fermi interaction. It is of interest to establish the degree to which the coupling constants G/sub v/ for the vector beta -decay and G/sub mu / for the muon decay are equal. The precision with which G/sub mu / is known has improved considerably due to more accurate measurements of the muon mean lifetime and mass. To determine G/sub v/ more accurately the ft value was measured for the 0/sup +/ yields 0/sup +/ beta transition in O/sup 14/( beta /sup +/ nu )N/ sup 14*/. After a total correction of +0.289% for nuclear electromagnetic form factors, competition from K capture, and electron screening, the ft value is 3069 plus or minus 13 sec. The corrected ft value yields G/sub v/ = (1.416 plus or minus 0.003) x 10/sup -49/ erg cm/sup 3/. If this value is adopt ed for G/sub mu /, then, without radiative corrections, the calculated mean lifetime of the muon becomes 2.250 plus or minus 0.610 mu sec, which is 1.8 plus or minus 0.5% greater than the mean of the observed lifetime, 2.210 plus or minus 0.003 mu sec.
