ROLE OF UNSATURATION IN THE RADIATION CHEMISTRY OF POLYMERS. PART I. POLYETHYLENE

A study was made of the variation in concentration of the forms of carbon-carbon unsaturated groups initially present in a low and a high density polyethylene with ionizing radiation dose, and the effect of added allyl and vinyl unsaturation as triallyl cyanurate, 1,19-eicosadiene, and divinyl benzene. The expressions for decay of unsaturated groups, which were proposed by previous workers, are not obeyed although the observed deviations from these relations may be slight. The results are interpreted in terms of a mechanism that postulates energy migration to, or localization in the vicinity of, unsaturated groups followed, in most cases, by a chain reaction involving radicals. The characteristics of trans-vinylene growth in polyethylene may be explained by postulating that radiolytically formed trans-vinylene groups do not enter into a chain reaction but scavenge radicals.
