An improved horizontal Van De Graaff generator in which the column is constructed in cantilever fashion out of a multiplicity of equipotential planes separated by two rows of insulators within the belt loop is designed. The equipotential planes have the effect of redistributing the bending moments in the insulators and seals between the insulators and planes, thus reducing the maximum bending moment in the column.
