REACTIONS (n,2n) AND ($gamma$,n) IN Au$sup 19$$sup 7$ (in Russian)

Interactions of fast neutrons and gamma quanta with Au/sup 197/ were studied using ~14 Mev neutrons from H/sup 3/(d,n)He/sup 4/ and gamma quanta from a tungsten betatron target. Gold foils of 14 mm diameter and 12 to 14 mg/cm/sup - 2/ served as targets. It is shown that only two reactions (n,2n) and ( gamma ,n) take place. The effective cross section of the (n,2n) reaction was found to be 1800 plus or minus 500 mb and for ( gamma ,n), with h nu = 17.5 Mev, 460 plus or minus 50 mb. Studies of the BETA activity of irradiated Au/sup 197/ specimens show two activities with half lives of 9.7 plus or minus 0.3 hr and 5.6 plus or minus 0.1 days. A rough evaluation of the upper boundary of the BETA spectram by absorption in aluminum indicates a maximum energy of 250 kev. (R.V.J.)
