CHANGES IN THE ESTERASES OF RAT BRAIN AND BLOOD SERUM FOLLOWING ACUTE CRANIAL EXPOSURE TO X-RAYS
Clear cut differences in the protein and esterase pattenns were shown in the irradiated and control halves of rat brains. The changes induced by acute doses of x radiation in the esterases of brain cells and blood serum after crandial exposure appeared, on the basis of the differences in electrophoretic migration and substrate-inhibitor activity, to be largely inigenous to the respective systems. The most profound changes occurred in blood. Several of the esterase components of the blood serum zymogram patterns were decidedly inactivated by irradiation while the brain tissue zymogram patterns exhibited an apparent increase, or a decrease in the activity of certain esterolytic proteins. It was concluded that these divergencies in the zymogram patterns may not only represent additions or deletions of enzymatically active molecules from the various cellular elements comprising the brain tissue, but also certain ancillary changes in their structural configurations and charge distributions as well.
