Evidence for scale effects in the end bearing capacity of open-ended piles in sand

Book ·
OSTI ID:413516
The paper draws on the following to examine the effect of pile diameter on the end bearing capacity of open-ended piles driven in sand; laboratory tests to measure sand plug capacity; finite element analyses to examine sand plug behavior; a data base of load tests on driven open-ended piles in sand. The evidence which is assembled strongly suggests a tip resistance which reduces with increasing pile diameter, at least at reasonable values for limiting pile displacement. The ability of the API RP2A design method to predict this trend is discussed.
