KINETIC STUDIES OF HETEROGENEOUS WATER REACTORS. Quarterly Progress Report, for Period Ending June 30, 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4134669

An investigation is made to determine whether the multithousand psi pressure pulses that occurred in the BORAX-I and SPERT-I destructive power excursions were generated by thermal mechanisms in the geometries of the unmolten reactor cores. An evaluation is made of prompt andd delayed pressure pulses. The effects of vapor blanketing are also investigated. The differences between the BORAXI and SPERT-I destructive transients, particularly with regard to pressure behavior, prompted calculations on temperature histories and extent of fuel melting in the two experiments. Results are presented on the hydrodynamic stability of the boiling reactors. (N.W.R.)
