Chemical and physical properties and stability of scandium nitride (ScN/ sub 0.970/) prepared by carbon in itric acid reduction of scandium oxide at 1900 to 2000 deg C are described. Powdered scandium nitride proved to be unstable in water, acid, and alkali solutions while compact scandium nitride is stable only in sulfuric acid and non-concentrate alkali solutions. Nitride does not oxidize until 600 deg C after which the oxidation proceeds rapidly and is completed at 500 deg . Physical properties indicate the metallic character of SCN/sub 0.970/. (R.V.J.)
