Preliminary experiments were carried out in order to produce Xe/sup 128/ , Kr/sup 80/, Kr/sup 82/, and Ar/sup 38/ tracers from potassi um iodide, ammonium bromide, and sodium chloride by the neutron irradiation in the JRR-2 reactor. Samples were irradiated under a thermal neutron flux of 4.3 x 10/sup 12//cm/sup 2/ sec for 20 minutes. Gamma rays from irradiated samples were analyzed, and the existence of Br/sup 82/, I/sup 128/, and Na/sup 24/ was confirmed. After two months of irradiation, 0.1-g samples were heated at 1000 deg C in a vacuum to extract the rare gas products. The extracted gas samples were analyzed with a mass spectrometer and the quantities of Xe/sup 128/, Kr/sup 80/, Kr/sup 82/ and Ar/sup 38/ were roughly estimated to be 6 x 10/sup -7/, 4 x 10/sup -7/, 1 x 10/ sup -7/, and 8 x 10/sup -7/ cc, respectively. Using Xe/sup 128/ gas, produced in this way, spikes of 10/sup -9/ cc were prepared in order to measure the micro- amount of Xe/sup 130/ (double BETA decay product). The method for the preparation of the spikes is described. (auth)
