THE COMBINED EFFECTS OF ROENTGEN AND ULTRAVIOLET IRRADIATION ON THE THROMBOCYTE COUNT IN MICE (in Hungarian)
Mice weighing 20 g were exposed to a lianau quartz lamp at a distance of 0.5 m for 30 min and to an x irradiation dose of 300 r. To investigate the possible development of a humoral factor affecting thrombocytes, 0.2 ml of serum of doubly irradiated mice was injected into the tail veins of recipient animals. At 60-min post-uv treatment the thrombocyte count fell 40%, then rose to 55% above normal at 24 hr and dropped to 10% above normal at 48 hr. Three groups of mice were irradiated. The control group received no protection and its thrombocyte count fell to 60.8% below normal on the 10th day postirradiation. The second group received uv treatment 24 hr prior to irradiation, and showed a 21% elevation in thrombocyte count at 10 days. If the uv treatment took place 24 hr postirradiation there was no marked change in thrombocyte count; a 10% drop below normal was noted. When serum obtained 24 hr post-uv treatment was injected into recipients 24 hr postirradiation, thrombocytopenia did not develop, but serum given on the 5th day did not prevent throinbocytopenia. It is concluded that uv treatment prior to roentgen irradiation, or serum given at the appropriate time from pretreated animals offers effective protection against x- radiationinduced thrombocytopenia.
