RADIONUCLIDES IN FOODS AND AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS. MILK PRODUCTION AND DAIRY PRODUCTS PROCESSING

Journal Article · · Ohio Agr. Expt. Sta., Spec. Rept. Ser.
OSTI ID:4133192

A brief review is presented on the potential problems that radioactive fallout might provide to the dairy industry, including available measures, and current research being conducted, to reduce radionuclides in milk, if such is required. Research on countermeasures for radioiodine and radiostrontium conducted by the Agricultural Research Service and in cooperation with the AEC and the Public Health Service are discussed. The removal of dairy cows from pasture and the use of stored feed is a very effective means of reducing iodine- 131 in milk. Additional research, however, is necessary to develop methods of preventing contamination of milk with iodine-131 when stored feeds are not readily available. The removal of iodine-131 by means of an ion exchange process is being studied and adapted to a pilot plant procedure. The removal of strontium-90 from milk by use of an ion exchange resin has been developed on a pilot plant scale. The procedure is now being adapted to commercial scale. Additional studies are required to determine the effect which any possible changes in the minor components would have on the nutritional qualities of the milk. The microbiological problems that might be associated with the resin treatment process must be determined. Continued research is necessary to determine the optimum conditions of strontium removal both from the standpoint of completeness and economy. Research problems relative to dairy cattle rations and farming practices that need to be studied are identified. (auth)
