EFFECTS OF KINETIN, RED LIGHT, AND GAMMA RADIATION ON GROWTH OF DISKS OF BEAN LEAVES

Both red light and kinetin stimulated the growth of disks cut from the leaves of dark-grown bean seedlings. Red light plus kinetin gave a greater response than either treatment alone. Growth curves for the red light treated and dark controls appeared to be parabolic. In the presence of kinetin some deviation from a parabolic curve occurred in the early stages of growth. Gamma radiation of 10 kr inhibited cell division. This level of radiation also inhibited the growth of both dark controls and red light-treated disks. The growth of kinetin-treated disks was only slightly inhibited by radiation. Kinetin-treated disks exposed to red light were essentially unaffected by radiation. It is suggested that kinetin might serve to restore a factor that was removed as a result of radiation. (auth)
