S>The object of this study was to develop a simple, easyto-build, apparatus for showing the appearance of a defect on a fuel element can of a swimming pool reactor. The apparatus used consists of a coil of activated carbon around a NaI(Tl) crystal. Through this coil psss the gases obtained by degassing a sample of water from the reactor; the fission gases which appear when a can leaks are trapped in the carbon; the NaI(Tl) crystal is coupled with a photomultiplier followed by a single-channel selector fixed on a photo-electric peak characteristic of the gamma spectrum of fission gases. Preliminary experiments were carried out in laboratory; a more complete device was then built and is now working in the reactor Melusine. (auth)
