Physical and chemical data indicate primary radiation effects induced by energy absorption within the molecule (the direct action) or by the indirect action of free-radical formation in ionization. An analysis was made of bcth the direct and indirect action to find some means of chemical protection from OH/sup - / in regenerating systems. Experiments with bromine and iodine ions introduced into onion root cells (for 10 min with 0.06M KI or KBr solution) showed a considerable depressing effect for Fenton reagent (0.001M FeSO/sub 4/ for 60 min + 0.01M H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ for 60 min) and for an ascorbic acid mixture (0.001M for 60 min + 0.01M H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ for 60 min). A saturating amount of hydrogen peroxide, inducing chromosome changes, was introduced into the reaction. iodine ions did not protect the chromosomes against hydrogen peroxide; the Fenton reagent was more genetically effective. Ascorbic acid (as free-radical acceptor) can protect the chromosomes. The data show that ionizing radiation has a direct effect on the chromosomes and other macromolecular cell structures, but the direct effect can be altered by cell metabolism or chromosome structure. It was found that iodine, bromine. and other chemicals actively protect the chromosomes from free radicals prepared by chemical methcds and do not influence radiation genetics. (R.V.J.)
