The design and construction of surface-barrier semiconductor detectors suitable for use in neutron-reaction studies is presented. The performance of these detectors in the reactions Si/sup 28/ (n, alpha ) and Si/sup 29/(n, alpha ) and in recording the alpha line of Po/sup 210/ is shown. Methods for stabilizing these counters are described. Radiation and ambient-atmosphere effects on the deterioration of both surface-barrier and diffusion-junctnon counters as determined. The use of these detectors, in conjunctnon with the associated-particle method, to determine the neutron fluxes from DD and DT reactions is described. (T.F.H.)
