Spectrophotometric determination of yttrium in Fe-Cr--Al and Ni--Cr alloys by the use of methylthymol blue as a color reagent was studied. The sample of 0.1 to 1 g is dissolved with 1 to 1 hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, iron, nickel, and chromium in the alloy are separated by mercury cathode electrolysis. An aliquot of the solution is transferred into a 100 ml beaker, and definite amounts of acethylacetone and methylthymol blue solutions are added. The mixture is adjusted to pH 6.4 plus or minus 0.05 by ammonia water and hexamine solution, and is poured into a 25 ml volumetric flask, which is then filled with pure water. The absorbance is measured at 610 m mu after twenty minutes. The coefficients of variation are 4.8% for the yttrium levels of 0.1 to 1%. (auth)
