TOTAL CROSS SECTION FOR $gamma$ + n $Yields$ $pi$$sup -$ + p NEAR THRESHOLD BY CHEW-LOW EXTRAPOLATION

The basic reaction was investigated near threshold by measuring the ratio R/sub d/ = sigma ( gamma + d yields pi /sup -/ + 2p)/ sigma ( gamma + d yields pi /sup +/ + 2n), and inferring the parameters of interest from R/sub d/ and the measured cross section for the reaction gamma + p yields pi /sup +/ + n. A new approach to the study of the basic reaction is possible through a Chew-Low extrapolation of certain recoilnucleon momenta into the nonphysical region. The total cross section near threshold on free stationary neutrons, deduced directly from the extrapolation, involves no uncertainties arising from the presence of the second nucleon in the target deuteron. When the method is specialized to treat the reaction gamma + d yields pi /sup -/ + 2p near threshold, the data are extrapolated to a pole in the transition amplitude in the nonphysical region of negative kinetic energy of the recoiling spectator proion. The results of extrapolations to the desired cross sections at energies of 153.4 to 174.1 Mev for the free nucleon reaction gamma + n yields pi /sup -/ + p are tabulated. (B.O. G.)
