RADIATION-INDUCED FORMATION OF ORGANOTIN COMPOUNDS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4131233

Particle size of tin, ambient atmosphere, chemical structure of halide, irradiation temperature, pretreatment of tin, and additives were employed as variables in a study of the nature of the reaction between organic bromides and powdered tin in a radiation field. Temperature and tin pretreatment appeared to affect the yield to the greatest extent. Among the butyl bromide isomers the reactivity followed the order tertiary > secondary > primary. Under the best conditions found in these limited studies, i.e., temperature at 90 deg C and addition of hydrobromic acid to the halide, a G-value of approximates 600 was obtained using 1-bromobutane.
