CAUSTIC STRESS CORROSION OF TYPE 347 STAINLESS STEEL

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4131228
The corrosion of type 347 stainless steel by aqueous solutions of NaOH and solutions of NaOH (16 to 60%) in sodium was studied on uranium-bend specimens, stressrupture specimens, and miniature boilers at 650 to 850 deg F. The aqueous solution produced stress-corrosion cracking at 650 deg F and the NaOH in sodium solution produced cracking at 850 deg F. The addition of sufficient disodium phosphate delayed or in some instances prevented cracking in dilute aqueous solutions. (C.J.G.)
