THE (p,pn) AND (p,n) REACTIONS ON Sc$sup 45$ INDUCED BY HIGH-ENERGY PROTONS

The reactions (p,pn) and (p,n) on Sc/sup 45/ have been investigated in the proton energy range of 120 to 670 Mev. The cross sections of these reactions decrease with the proton energy from approximately 70 and 4 mb at 120 Mev down to approx equal 40 and 1 mb at 670 Mev, respectively. The influence of the nuclear structure on the cross section of the reactions under study is discussed, under the assumption of direct interaction mechanism between the incident proton and nuclear nucleons. The experimental value of the production cross section ratio of Sc/sup 44g/ and Sc /sup 44m/, which is 2.2, is compared to the calculated one. The parameter sigma entering into the expression for nuclear level density is estimated. (auth)
