METHOD FOR MEASURING FISSIONABLE ISOTOPE CONCENTRATION

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4130985

A nondestructive testing method and apparatus are described for determining the concentrations of two or more fissionable isotopes, e.g., U/sup 235/ and Pu/sup 239/, in reactor fuel, In the method, the fuel is irradiated successively with at least two neutron fluxes of mean energies of 0.025 and 0.3 ev, and the resulting prompt and/or delayed neutrons are measured and used to calculate the concentrations. The number of neutron fluxes used must be at least equal to or greater than the number of fissionable isotopes being measured. Several ways of obtaining the required different neutron fluxes from one source are given. (D.L.C.)
