The high temperature reactors are marked by their flexibility for the application of different fuel cycles, which results from the neutronic properties of the fissile and fertile nuclides and from the technological and technical properties of the system. This holds as well for the pebble bed as for the prismatic fuel type reactor. In the low enriched uranium fuel cycle up to 89% of the bred fissile plutonium is burnt in situ. In the highly enriched uranium/ thorium fuel cycle, recycling of the bred U 233 optimizes the economy of fissile material. The conversion rate can be raised up to the range between 0.85 and 0.95. A demonstration of the flexibility of the HTR's is given by the possibility for changing over between different fuel cycles at fuel operating conditions. (orig.)
