INSTABILITY OF A POSITIVE COLUMN IN A MAGNETIC FIELD

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4130306
The losses from the positive column of a glow discharge in an axial magnetic field are enhanced at a critical magnetic field, B/sub c/, by the transition from an azimuthally symmetric discharge to a constricted, rotating helical discharge. No explanation for this instability is given; empirically, B/ cub c/ is approximately proportional to the square roots of the ion mass and approximately inversely proportional to the radius of the discharge tube and is almost independent of the discharge current over the range of 0.05 to 5 amp.
