DEVICES FOR REMOVING FISSIONABLE MATERIAL RODS FROM NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4129532
The device is used in connection with gas-cooled reactors having a block of solid moderator pierced by a plurality of horizontal channels housing fuel slugs. A plurality of parallel inclined chutes runs along the outlet face of the moderator block. Each chute passes slightly below and parallel to an oblique row of channel discharge ends. Curved guiding elements connect the discharge ends with the chutes. Each inclined chute connects with a helical chute, preferably located inside the shield, which consists of a curved steel angle arranged along the inside wall of a circular cylinder with vertical axis. The bottom end of the helical chute is connected to an inclined conduit extending through the shield into a chamber provided with means for receiving spent or burst slugs. The slugs are pushed out of the reactor by conventional means, and the slope of the chutes is so arranged that the slugs slide by gravity at a suitable speed. (A.G.W.)
