PROCESS OF PREPARATION OF URANIUM COMPOUNDS FROM URANIUM-MOLYBDENUM ALLOYS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4128902

A process is given for preparing, from U--Mo alloys, U compounds which are practically free from Mo. The process comprises heating the alloy to 100 to 300 deg C and then treating the alloy with a gaseous mixture of HCl or HF andd O/ sub 2/. Mo is volatilized as the oxyhalide, while U remains in the residue ss and oxide (when HCl is used) or oxyfluoride and tetrafluoride (when HF is used). approximates 90% of the Mo is eliminated in this way, and the U residue may then be fluorinated to give UF/sub 6/. The effects of variables on the reaction rates are discussed. (D.L.C.)
