SHIELDING AGAINST CRITICAL EXCURSIONS IN PLANTS PROCESSING FISSILE MATERIALS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4128652
Nominal wall thicknesses such as 2 ft of concrete have been mentioned as being sufficient to protect an operator from radiation injury in fissile- material processing excursions. The probable radiation hazard for a standard incident of 10/sup 17/ fissions is defined, and the effects of shielding and prompt operator action are defined. The implications of increasing standard wall thicknesses to a sufficient extent to protect an operator from receiving an emergency dose of 25 r are discussed. (W.D.M.)
