A synthesis of high purity benzene in 50 to 60% yields that is suitable for low level liquid scintillation counting is described. The method involves a low temperature catalytic conversion of acetylene to benzene which was first reported by I. Shapiro and H. G. Weiss in 1957. Application of this method to C dating essentially eliminates previous problems encountered in the use of liquid scintillation counting for this purpose. The method extends the sensitivity of the C dating method and yet requires only standard commercially available counting systems. Interlaboratory check samples obtained from the U.S.G.S. C/ sup 14/-dating laboratory were dated with good agreement. Application of this method has been made in determining the natural radiocarbon content of 14 archeological samples, 15 geological samples, and 2 marine water samples. (Disseration Abstr.)
