A method is given for shaping a high-molecular-weight linear polymer to form a fibrous material which is particularly suited for the production of strong, highly porous yarns. The method comprises imparting molecular orientation to a film or band of the polymer by stretching unidirectionally, splitting the oriented film in the stretching direction into fiber networks, stretching the fiber networks transversely to the splitting direction to expand the meshes of the networks, and finally fixing the expanded networks. Several possible fixation methods are heating, swelling, chemical crosslinking, and irradiation. An example of the method is given using polyethylene. (D.L.C.)
