THE RELATIVISTIC PHOTOEFFECT AT THE K-SHELL THRESHOLD

Journal Article · · Arkiv Fysik
OSTI ID:4125494
The K-shell photoeffect is studied in the limit of zero kinetic energy of the outgoing photoelectron. The relativistic ( alpha Z)/sup 2/ corrections are obtained in the general case, and "exact" numerical calculations are performed for Z = 92. The total cross section is reduced by 21% (for Z = 92), and the angular distribution is changed, compared to the nonrelativistic results. Considerable electron polarization effects are obtained.
