COSMIC RAYS IN METAGALACTIC SPACE

On the basis of evolutionary cosmology, the energy density of w/sub MG/ of cosmic rays in metagalatic space is probably much less than the energy density w/sub G/ approximately 10/sup -12/g/cm/sup 3/ in the Galaxy. The best estimate at this time is w/sub G / approximately 10/sup -16/ to 10/sup -15/ erg/cm/sup 3/. The energy density w/sub p/ of the thermal radiation in the Metagalaxy is about 10/sup -15/ erg/cm/sup 3/; 10/sup -16/ ev/cm/sup 3/. Models are also discussed for which w/sub MG/ is comparable with w/sub G/ within the local supergalaxy or Local Group only, but these models can only explain the data for galactic cosmic rays if several far-reaching and improbable assumptions are introduced. On the other hand, the galactic theory for the origin of most of the cosmic rays observed at the earth does not encounter any serious objections. The electron component of cosmic rays, and radio emission and gamma radiation of extregalactic origin are discussed. (auth)
