PROMPT NEUTRONS FROM FISSION
An absolute measurement of nu , the average number of neutrons emitted per fission, was made for the spontaneous fission of Cf/sup 252/. This number is 3.771 plus or minus 0.031 prompt neutrons per fission. Measurements of nu for the spontaneous fission of Pu/sup 240/ and for neutron induced fission of U/ sup 233/, U/sup 235/ and Pu/sup 239/ were made relative to the spontaneous fission nu of Cf/sup 252/. Several incident neutron energies between zero and 14.5 Mev were used. A universal nu versus incident neutron energy curve for U/ sup 233/, U/sup 235/, and Pu/sup 239/, was constructed by adding a constant energy to the incident neutron energy for each nucleide. The constants for U/sup 233/, U/sup 235/, and Pu/sup 239/ were 0.46, 0, and 3.3 Mev, respectively. The data can be fitted with two straight lines of slopes 0.085 neutrons per Mev up to about 1.6 Mev and 0.16 neutrons per Mev above 1.6 Mev. At thermal energy the nu value is 2.412 prompt neutrons per fission. (auth)
