STUDY OF THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE MASS DISTRIBUTION OF THE FISSION FRAGMENTS AND THE QUANTUM CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NUCLEUS AT THE SADDLE POINT (in Russian)
Various characteristics of nuclear fission, such as the energy dependence of the fission cross section, indicate that at the moment of fission the nucleus seems to remember'' the properties it possessed at the saddle point; it may be assumed, therefore, that the mass distribution of the fragments may also conserve the inherent characteristics of the nucleus at that point. The problem was studied on the U nucleus which possesses a strong maximum at 1.5 Mev in the energy dependence of the angular anisotropy when undergoing fission. The effects of fission due to neutrons at 1.5, 5, 6.5, and 15 Mev were compared, using a 30-microgram per cm/sup 2/ thick fissioning layer supported by an organic film. The measurements indicated that in the case of fission of U/sup 238/ by 1.5-Mev neutrons, the quantum characteristics of the nucleus at the saddle point of the angular anisotropy curve do not affect the mass distribution of the fission fragments.
