The coronal line Fe xiv 5303 A has been detected in Vela X at a statistical significance above zero of 6.3 sigma with a flux (3.9 +- 0.6) x 10$sup -12$ ergs (cm$sup 2$ s)$sup -1$ in a 1$sup 0$ diameter field. This demonstrates that the X-ray flux of Vela X is of thermal origin. The 3 sigma upper limits for the Fe xiv 5303 A and Ar xiv 4412 A coronal line fluxes from the supernova remnant Puppis A are respectively 4 x 10$sup -12$ and 2.6 x 10$sup -12$ ergs (cm$sup 2$ s)$sup -1$.
