Radioalbumin and radioiodine, together with Lugol's solution, KClO/sub 4/ , or Tapazole premedication, were used to study the components of thyroid region radioactivity in human subjects. In measuring thyroid uptake, radioactivity from intra- and extra-thyroid vessels and trapped radioactivity contribute to the body background of the neck. The neck-thigh radioactivity ratio after radioalbumin administration was greater than one. The methods commonly used for eliminating the effects of body background of the neck (thyroid shielding, and subtraction of thigh radioactivity or of vessel radioactivity in the thyroid region) are shown to be inadequate.
