An apparatus for automatic control of a reactor during startup is described. A detecting element is moved within the radiation field of the reactor in the direction away from the reactor at a speed corresponding to a desired program of reactor output variations. The output signal of the detecting element is compared with a predetermined demand signal to produce a control signal corresponding to the difference between the demand and output signals. The control rods are moved successively to a predetermined maximum extent in response to the control signal so as to minimize it. (M.C.G.)
