If the HI shell observed around supernova remnant W44 is identified as the fossil blast wave, W44 is 7 million years old. The apparent 13 pc buoyant displacement of the non-thermal source has been produced by a 0.7 pc Myr$sup -2$ = 2.1 x 10$sup -9$ cm s$sup -2$ local gravitational field. This acceleration is twice the mean Oort value at the altitude of W44. The acceleration vector is inclined about 30 degrees from the normal vector to the galactic plane. (orig.)
